Although the Baden-Wurttemberg breed registry is one of the smallest ones in Germany it was well represented at the 2012 Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Illinois.

Kir Royal, a Wurttemberg gelding owned and ridden by Roberta Carleton placed third in the 6 year old class. The pair only ranked 11th after the qualifiers, but Roberta Carleton prepared her horse diligently for the event and had a spectacular ride in the initial test on Friday, which landed her in second place. The pair remained very constant throughout the final test on Sunday, which earned them the third place in the overall championship.

Roberta Carleton had purchased Kir Royal in early 2012 with the help of the Wurttemberg breed registry, after traveling all over Germany on a mission to find the horse of her dreams. In 2011 Kir Royal had been regional reserve champion for Southern Germany which qualified him for the 2011 Bundeschampionat (German National Young Horse Championship). There he placed 6th in the small finals with an average score of 80%.

Kir Royal is by Köpenick out of a Rotspon mare, and was bred by Norbert Humpf. He is another example that successful breeding is no coincidence, because Mr. Humpf is also the breeder of the Wurttemberg stallion French Kiss (Florestan x Donnerhall), who won the 6 yr. old world championship in 2004.

The Wurttemberg breed registry has drawn a lot of attention in recent years after La Biosthetique Sam FBW and his rider Michael Jung won individual eventing gold at the Alltech WEG in Kentucky in 2010, and individual and team eventing gold at the 2012 Olympics in London. The FBW stands for Friends of the Baden-Wurttemberg Horses, an acronym that Robert Dover’s unforgettable Kennedy also had attached to his name.
